Lateral sewer scope · Eden Prairie

Sewer scope inspection — see the line before you buy the house.

Camera-recorded video of your lateral sewer line, from cleanout to city main. Root intrusion, bellies, offset joints, cracked Orangeburg — documented on video, in the same-evening report.

Why this matters in Eden Prairie

Old pipe, mature roots, large lots.

Older Eden Prairie neighborhoods — Round Lake, Cedar Forest, original Mitchell-Lake-area subdivisions — still run clay tile and cast iron from the house to the city main. The lots are large, the oaks are mature, and every joint is a candidate for root intrusion. We have documented bellies, offset joints, and even cracked Orangeburg in homes built as recently as 1979. On any home over 25 years old, sewer scope is non-optional in our recommendation.

What the camera finds.

Every Eden Prairie sewer scope produces video evidence. These are the six findings that drive the largest surprises after closing — the things you want documented before you sign.

Critical

Root intrusion

Hair-like roots enter joints, mature into mats, restrict flow. Most common Eden Prairie finding on clay-tile lateral.

Critical

Belly / sag

Soil settlement creates a low spot. Standing water and waste pool — a chronic clog point that requires excavation to fix.

Major

Offset joint

Two pipe sections no longer aligned. Step-in waste catches solids and roots colonize the gap. Patchable or replaceable depending on offset.

Critical

Orangeburg collapse

Tar-and-fiber pipe used 1950–72. Deforms oval, then collapses. Found in EP homes as late as 1979. Auto full-replacement.

Major

Cracks & fractures

Longitudinal and circumferential cracks in cast iron and clay tile. Soil fines wash in, void forms, sinkhole risk over time.

Monitor

Material transition

Clay-to-PVC or cast-iron-to-PVC junctions. The transition itself is a known weak point — flag for monitoring even if currently sound.

How it runs

Three steps. Same evening, video in hand.

01 / ACCESS

Locate the cleanout

Most Eden Prairie homes have an exterior or basement cleanout. If none is accessible, we can pull a toilet to gain access. We confirm everything during scheduling — no surprises on inspection day.

~10 min
02 / SCOPE

Push the camera, record the run

Self-leveling sewer scope camera pushed from cleanout toward the city main. Full HD video the entire length. We mark depth, distance, and material transitions on screen as we go.

Same-evening report includes the full video, still-frame defect summary, severity tagging, and a plain-language recommendation your agent can use in negotiation.

Frequently asked

Sewer scope, answered.

What is a sewer scope inspection?
A video inspection of the lateral sewer line connecting the home to the city main. We push a self-leveling sewer scope camera from the cleanout through the full lateral, recording the entire run. The result is documented evidence of pipe material, condition, and any defects — root intrusion, bellies, offsets, cracks, or material transitions.
Should I get a scope on a newer home?
On any home 25+ years old, non-optional. On newer homes (2000+) we still recommend it — PVC joints can offset, settlement creates bellies, and construction debris is occasionally left in the line. Round Lake area, Cedar Forest, and original Mitchell-Lake-area subdivisions are highest priority.
Do you scope from the cleanout or the city main?
From the house cleanout, pushing toward the city main, recording the entire run. If no cleanout is accessible, we can pull a toilet to gain access. We document any belly, root intrusion, joint failure, or pipe-material transition.
What is a belly?
A low spot in the lateral where soil settlement has caused the pipe to dip below grade. Solid waste settles, water pools, the section becomes a chronic clog point. On the camera, a belly shows as standing water that interrupts gravity flow. Repair requires excavation and re-bedding.
What is Orangeburg pipe?
Tar-impregnated wood-fiber pipe used 1950–1972. Deforms oval, then collapses. We have documented Orangeburg in Eden Prairie homes built as late as 1979 — late inventory still made it into a few subdivisions. Any Orangeburg finding triggers an immediate full-replacement recommendation.
What if you find a problem?
We deliver the full video, still-frame defect summary, severity tagging, and a recommendation. You and your agent decide on negotiation strategy — credit at closing, seller repair, or contingency exit. We do not perform repairs ourselves; that independence protects the report's objectivity.
How long does a scope take on site?
30–60 minutes depending on lateral length and access. Video and still-frame summary integrated into your same-evening report. As a standalone visit, the entire appointment is typically under an hour.
